The Need Is Growing: New Data Reveals Rising Food Insecurity Across Orange County

Each year, Feeding America, a nationwide network of 198 food banks that includes Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, releases its Map the Meal Gap, the most comprehensive local look at food insecurity in America. The latest figures, reflecting calendar year 2024, confirm what Second Harvest sees every day: the need in Orange County continues to grow.

The most recent data shows:

  • 387,370 people in Orange County are facing food insecurity, a 6% increase over the prior year. That means 1 in 8 individuals across the county lacks reliable access to enough nutritious food.
  • 112,420 children in Orange County are facing food insecurity, a 27% increase in just one year. That means 1 in 6 kids in our community experience food insecurity. The number has climbed steadily, from 84,700 children in 2022 to 88,740 in 2023 to more than 112,000 in 2024.
  • Food insecurity disproportionately affects communities of color. The data shows that 29% of Black residents and 18% of Latino residents in Orange County are facing food insecurity, compared with 9% of White residents. Because of population size, the largest number of individuals facing food insecurity overall is within the Latino community, at approximately 195,000 people.
  • Nearly half of residents facing food insecurity don’t qualify for government assistance. In Orange County, 49.9% of residents facing food insecurity earn too much to qualify for CalFresh (SNAP) benefits. Food insecurity in Orange County often exists alongside the county’s high cost of living, not just low income.

Behind every statistic is a community member, a parent, a child or a senior who deserves consistent access to nutritious food. Second Harvest Food Bank remains committed to closing this gap through our network of pantry partners, agencies and volunteers across Orange County.

We are grateful for the continued support of our donors, partners and community who make this work possible. Together, we can ensure every person in Orange County has access to the nutritious food they need to thrive.
