Grand Opening of Golden West College’s New Permanent Pantry Location – The Stand
On September 19, one of our valued college pantry partners, Golden West College hosted the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for the new location of its Basic Needs Center, The Stand.
The Stand is a critical resource for students on campus, providing groceries and hygiene items for nearly 2,000 students each year. The Stand also serves students with personalized case management, connecting them to on- and off-campus resources to help address needs such as housing, childcare and emergency grants.
Our CEO, Claudia Bonilla Keller, was the keynote speaker at the event. She spoke about our amazing partnership with Golden West College. the shocking statistics surrounding hunger among college students and the importance of places like The Stand.
“We live in one of the most affluent counties in one of the richest states in arguably the richest nation in the history of the world… and one in 10 people at some point in the year doesn’t know where their next meal is coming from,” said Keller. “I love the name The Stand because you all have taken a stand for your students. Please know that Second Harvest will stand with you here. We are proud to stand with you and you can count on us.”
Approximately 18,000 students enroll each year at Golden West, most of them with some amount of financial need. In addition to paying for tuition, many have families, children and others to support. More than 70% of the College’s students work while attending school to pay for rent, food and other basic needs. The College has long provided basic needs support via an on-campus food pantry, bus passes, scholarships and more.
The Stand is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm to all currently enrolled Golden West College students, regardless of their financial aid status.
