Advocating for Change: Second Harvest in Washington, D.C.

Last month, Second Harvest Food Bank joined more than 300 food banks from across the country in Washington, D.C., for Feeding America’s annual Food Bank Fly-In.

The event brought together food bank leaders, advocates and partners to meet with members of Congress and elevate the importance of federal programs that support communities across the country. These conversations are a key part of advancing policy solutions that strengthen access to nutritious food and address the root causes of economic hardship.

At Second Harvest, advocacy is an essential part of our work. While food banks play a critical role in supporting communities, lasting change requires strong public policy and sustained investment. Through year-round advocacy and community engagement, we work to raise awareness, inform decision-makers and mobilize support for programs that promote long-term stability and well-being.

This year marked a meaningful milestone for Second Harvest. For the first time, we were joined by two of our Community Champions, Santiago and Kassem, along with Malia, Government & Public Affairs Manager at Second Harvest Food Bank, who all helped share stories and insights directly with legislators. Together, their voices brought a powerful and personal perspective to the conversations, helping to highlight the real impact and the importance of protecting and strengthening this work.

Throughout the week, our team met with members of Orange County’s congressional delegation, including Representatives Lou Correa, Dave Min, Derek Tran, Young Kim, Linda Sánchez and Mike Levin. We are grateful for their time, partnership and commitment to listening to the needs of our community.

We can’t achieve our vision of an Orange County with food and nutritional security for all without advocating for change in the systems and structures that created the hunger crisis. That’s why we work alongside our coalitions and community partners, including individuals with lived experience, to educate, inform and mobilize support. We encourage them (and you) to partner with us in providing dignified, equitable and consistent access to nutritious food for all.
