WELCOME TO FOUNDERS FARM!
WHAT: Founders Farm is a program of Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County that provides fresh, local produce to children, families and seniors experiencing food insecurity in our community. Founded in 2021 in a nearby location, it is named in honor of the Food Bank’s founders, Daniel J. Harney and Tom Fuentes. To date, we have grown a variety of lettuces including romaine, Swiss chard, bok choy, arugula, red sail lettuce and kale at Founders Farm.
HOW: The crops at Founders Farm are grown in above-ground boxes or trays utilizing “Garden Soxx” growing techniques that provide a controlled growing environment, ensuring superior nutrient-dense produce, high yields and faster growth rates.
Volunteers assist Second Harvest’s Farm Manager in planting, weeding and harvesting the crops. Once harvested, 100% of the fresh produce is taken to the Food Bank’s distribution center just 1.2 miles east on Marine Way. Within 48 hours, it is distributed to our Partner Network which includes houses of worship, schools, after-school programs, colleges and universities, senior centers, shelters for the unhoused, soup kitchens and other community-based nonprofit organizations throughout Orange County.
WHY: Founders Farm enables us to experiment with different produce types and grow more delicate crops that we may not be able to grow at our 40-acre farm partnership, Harvest Solutions Farm, also in Irvine.
OUR THANKS: We are grateful to our host, Southwinds Farm & Gardens, for underwriting the water and rent, and proving that edible landscapes can be beautiful. Generous financial support of Founders Farm has been provided by Bank of America and Harvesters, a group of devoted women who work tirelessly throughout the year in support of Second Harvest. Additionally, Founders Farm would not be possible without our agriculture partners, Solutions for Urban Agriculture and Orange County Produce.
