Behind the Scenes at our Food Bank

Explore How Food Reaches Those in Need

At Second Harvest Food Bank, the journey to feed our community starts long before food reaches a table. It begins with our Food Sourcing team, who acquire food through government programs, grocery rescue, purchases, donations and our farm programs: Harvest Solutions Farm, our collaboration with UC South Coast Research & Extension Center and Solutions for Urban Agriculture and Founders Farm.

Once the food arrives at our Distribution Center, it undergoes careful inspection—just like stocking your own pantry, but on a much larger scale. Our 108,000-square-foot facility acts as the heart of our operation, where fresh produce, dry goods and other perishable items are stored safely until they’re ready for distribution.

Keeping food fresh is a top priority. After arriving in a refrigerated truck, coming through one of our cold docks and into our 16,000-square foot cold storage, perishable food maintains the right temperature until it reaches families in need. Finally, our dedicated drivers load up the trucks and hit the road, making over 30 deliveries each day to our Partner Network across Orange County. Last year alone, our trucks traveled a distance equal to circling the Earth eight times!

Every step of this process is powered by people—volunteers, donors and staff—who believe in our mission to provide dignified, equitable and consistent access to nutritious food. The mural at the entrance to our building is a reminder of this connection, symbolizing the roads that unite us and the shared humanity that drives us forward.

Without community support, none of this would be possible. Because of you, we can continue our work for as long as our community needs us.
